The prestigious Gina Bachauer International Artists Piano Competition has announced its winners for 2024. After advancing through five rigorous rounds, three exceptional pianists have been named the Gold, Silver and Bronze Medalists.
The winners are:
Gold Medalist: Youl Sun, who also received the Audience Choice Prize and Student Jury Prize.
Silver Medalist: Carter Johnson, who was additionally honored with the Prize for Best Performance of the Commissioned Work, a new composition by Gabriela Lena Frank entitled Two Andean Portraits.
Bronze Medalist: Wynona Yinuo Wang.
The final round performances took place over the last two days, filling Abravanel Hall with standing ovations, curtain calls, and shouts of bravo. The Awards Ceremony followed, concluding the competition that began with 333 candidates from 40 different countries. Preliminary rounds were held in Hamburg, New York City, Hong Kong, and Salt Lake City, with 120 pianists advancing. 31 pianists competed in the quarterfinals, 12 in the semifinals, and 3 in the final round.
Additionally, Hyojin Shin was awarded the Sascha Gorodnitzki Discretionary Prize, given at the Jury’s discretion to a non-finalist.
The Gina Bachauer International Artists Piano Competition, named after the renowned Greek pianist, is one of the most prestigious events in the world of classical music. It has a rich history of discovering and nurturing young talent since its inception in 1976.
